THE ROAD OF FLIGHT (Claire Nivard) 'Cross red and gray lands Past the Great Divide Up and down the mountains Driving day and night From the desert to the valleys Rolling on the road of flight We're leaving the Dust Bowl behind They took our farm, they took our pride 'Got no place to call our home Now we're strangers in the land where we were born Listen to the motor Careful with the wheels Listen to that ol' jug pounding up the hill 'Gotta get to Bakersfield 'Gotta hold on to Mother Road We're leaving the Dust Bowl behind They took our farm, they took our pride 'Got no place to call our home Now we're strangers in the land where we were born Now we're strangers in the land where we were born

I'LL BE THERE (Claire Nivard) I'll be everywhere you look In starving people's fight In hungry children's laugh When they know it's dinner time Wherever men eat what they grow In little houses of their own I'll be there, in the shadow and in the light Ma' I'll be there, in the shadow and in the light I'll be there Down by the river Running through the hills In the clouds rolling by, I'll be there In the rain and the summer wind Blowing in the fields Up above the sky I'll be there All around Day and night I'll be everywhere you look And buried deep into your heart In your tears and in your smile I'll be the wings you need to fly Whenever you're lonely and cold I'll be the beacon on your road I'll be there, in the shadow and in the light Ma' I'll be there, in the shadow and in the light I'll be there Wherever men eat what they grow In little houses of their own I'll be there, in the shadow and in the light Ma' I'll be there, in the shadow and in the light I'll be there

about

Created for the play «Les raisins de la colère», a French stage adaptation of John Steinbeck's «The Grapes of Wrath» directed by Xavier Simonin, STEINBECK is Glenn Arzel & Claire Nivard's work on what is considered one of the Great American Novels. With Jean-Jacques Milteau as musical director, the composition of these pieces was inspired by folk and old-time music in the 1930s. They were recorded in a spirit of warm and acoustic live music, as on stage, to tell the story of the Joad family on their way to California, along with thousands of migrants, during the Great Depression.
